Hello. This is GS Consulting! We would like to share important updates from the IRCC regarding international students.
Key points from the update are as follows:
<Student Visa-related>
π IRCC has announced a reduction in the number of study permits issued to international students in Canada for approximately two years starting January 22, 2024. The plan is to allow around 360,000 visas for 2024, marking a 35% decrease from the previous year. Additionally, to prevent regional imbalances, individual provinces and territories will have different caps based on their international student populations.
π An attestation letter from a province or territory is now mandatory when applying for a student visa. Each province or territory will issue this letter, and it will become a required document for student visa applications. Provinces and territories are expected to establish a process for issuing attestation letters to students by no later than March 31, 2024.
<PGWP-related>
π Starting September 1, 2024, graduates from study programs under Curriculum Licensing Arrangements will no longer be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
You can refer to the IRCC site where informs DLI list, on the site IRCC also informs if the institution is eligible for PGWP.
Furthermore, Graduates of masterβs and other short graduate-level programs will soon be eligible to apply for a 3-year work permit, instead of being tied to the program length.
<Spouse Open Work Permit-related>
π Following the update, open work permits will ONLY be available to spouses of international students enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs. Unfortunately, spouses of students in other levels of study, including college programs, will no longer be eligible for open work permits.
IRCC aim to ensure genuine students receive the support they require and have the resources they need for an enriching study experience in Canada, while at the same time stabilizing the overall number of students arriving and alleviating pressures on housing, health care and other services in Canada.
