Canada News: Truth and Reconciliation Day Designated as BC Statutory Holiday!

Every year on September 30th, Canada observes Orange Shirts Day, a special day dedicated to raising awareness and education about the Canadian government’s residential school system, which targeted Indigenous children in the past, and its impact on Indigenous communities. This day was first established in 2013 and has been commemorated as a federal holiday in Canada since 2021. While British Columbia previously recognized this day as a commemoration, starting this year, it has officially become a statutory holiday in BC as well. 🤠

Although its official name is Truth and Reconciliation Day, it is commonly known as Orange Shirts Day. 🍊 This day serves as a time to remember the young Indigenous children who suffered abuse and even death in residential schools, as well as to acknowledge the pain of their families.

The name “Truth and Reconciliation” emphasizes the importance of revealing the truth as it is, without distortion, and acknowledging past mistakes. 👀❣️

Now, with its designation as a provincial statutory holiday in BC, not only federal employees but also many more individuals will have the opportunity to observe this important day as a statutory holiday.

However, please note that September 30th, 2023, is on a Saturday, so the substitute holiday will be observed on October 2nd (Monday).
