During the pandemic, Canada temporarily extended the validity period of LMIA to stabilize the labor market. However, with the recent roadmap announcement, effective from May 1st, 2024,
-the validity period of LMIA will be returned from 12 to 6 months,
-All employers identified in the 2022 Workforce Solutions Road Map will have a reduction from 30% to 20% of their total workforce that can come in through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, under the low wage stream, with an exception for the construction and health care sectors.
Overall, various measures are being reinforced as the Canadian government’s intention to reduce the temporary resident population from 6.2% to 5% over the next three years.
Following restrictions on study permits, conditions for foreign workers are also being strengthened. This indicates Canada’s gradual shift towards reducing reliance on temporary foreign workers and supporting Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
