[Alberta Provincial Nominee Program] Tourism And Hospitality Stream Open

As announced, the new stream of the Alberta Provincial Nominee Program, the Tourism Immigration Stream, has opened today (March 1st). This stream includes both skilled and unskilled positions. While the employer requirements are more stringent than the regular AAIP (Alberta Advantage Immigration Program), they are still reasonable.

Here are the three most important points:

First, immigration applications must be based on a work permit obtained through LMIA.

Second, a minimum of 6 consecutive months, full-time employment is required from the employer who provided the Job Offer (which is apparently an LMIA).

Third, applicants must hold a valid work permit based on positive LMIA at the time of immigration application; Maintained Status is not eligible.

For detailed information, you can check on https://www.alberta.ca/tourism-and-hospitality-stream-eligibility.

Employer Requirements (seem strict but are reasonable):

First, employers must be registered with the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) or be exempt (WCB clearance letter is submitted, and if applicable, the Alberta Industry Code must be specified). Second, the Alberta employer providing the Job Offer must be a member of the relevant industry’s Alberta union, as detailed in the link.

Possible Positions: All positions are listed in detail on the provided link. Popular positions include Restaurant Manager, Food Service Supervisor, Cook, Chef, Food Server, Kitchen Helper, Hotel Manager, Front Desk Agent and Light Duty Cleaner (Housekeeper).

However, Positions like Motel Managing Supervisor and Housekeeping Supervisor are not listed.

Experience Conditions: Applicants must have a minimum of 6 consecutive months, full-time employment from the same employer who provided the Job Offer. Must have been paid which means volunteer work is not considered, and the experience must be gained under a legally recognized status declared by the immigration authorities.

Job Offer or Employment Contract Conditions: The Job Offer or contract must be from the same employer for a minimum of 6 months of full-time work, and it should be valid for at least 12 months. Salary and other conditions follow LMIA standards.

Ineligible Contract Conditions: Part-time positions are ineligible. Independent contracts are not considered. Home-based businesses are ineligible. Virtual locations are ineligible.

Language Conditions: A minimum score of 4 in all areas of the English language or a score of 4 or above in all areas of the French language test is required. Official test results must be less than 2 years old at the time the application is submitted. The result is based on the test date, not the date of result issuance.

Educational Conditions: At least a high school diploma is required. Education from countries other than Canada requires Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).
