Updates related to international students.

Hello, it’s the one & only consulting, GS Consulting! ❤️

On December 7, 2023, the IRCC announced some updates related to international students.

Let’s dive into the four key highlights!

Firstly, when applying for a study permit, there’s a significant adjustment in the required proof of funds. The previous amount of $10,000 has increased, reaching $20,635. This policy will be effective starting January 1, 2024, for study permit applications.

Next up, the exemption from the 20-hour-per-week limit on the number of hours overseas students may work off campus while classes are in session will be extended until April 30, 2024.

International students who are already in Canada, as well as those who have already applied for a study permit as of December 7, 2023, will be authorized to work more than 20 hours per week off campus until April 30, 2024.

Moving on to the third point, the temporary policy providing an additional 18-month work permit to post-graduation work permit holders expiring up to December 31, 2023, will not be extended further.

Lastly, Students starting a study program before September 1, 2024, can continue counting online study time towards a future post-graduation work permit, constituting less than 50% of the program of study.
